What is room tone?
Room tone is the sound of a room with nobody talking — the faint hum, air and hiss that is present in every recording. Editors record thirty seconds of it because a cut to true digital silence sounds wrong; a cut to room tone sounds like a pause.
It is why "remove all silence" tools can make an episode sound like it was assembled from bits: each gap gets replaced with nothing at all, and nothing is a sound your ear notices.
Cast shortens pauses rather than replacing them, so what remains of each pause is the recording’s own room tone. If you run the Noise Remover the tone gets quieter across the whole episode consistently, which is fine — what breaks the illusion is the tone changing at a cut, not its level.
