What is a noise gate?
A noise gate mutes the audio whenever it drops below a set level and opens again when someone speaks, so the hiss, fan or keyboard between sentences disappears. It does nothing to noise that plays while you are talking — that is a noise remover’s job.
The gate is the oldest trick for a "clean" recording, and the easiest to get wrong: set the threshold too high and it chops the ends off quiet words; too low and the hum stays. Every setting is a compromise between the two.
Cast does not ask you to set one. The Noise Remover separates the voice from everything else, so the background goes away under the speech as well as between sentences, and the gating that some presets still use is tuned automatically.
