What is a de-esser, and what is sibilance?
Sibilance is the sharp hiss on "s", "sh" and "t" sounds that a close microphone exaggerates. A de-esser is a compressor that listens only in that frequency band and turns those sounds down for the few milliseconds they last, leaving the rest of the voice alone.
You notice it most on headphones: every "s" spits. Turning down the treble fixes it but dulls the whole voice; the de-esser targets just the offending sounds.
In Cast the Enhance voice presets already tame sibilance for most recordings. If you want to set it yourself, a de-esser sits in the lane’s Advanced rack alongside the EQ, compressor and reverb.
