Staff picks

D major is a bright, ringing key. It has two sharps, and it suits the open strings of the violin, viola and cello, so the whole string section resonates. That is one reason so many orchestral fanfares and fiddle tunes are written in D.

Good uses for music in D

  • celebratory and uplifting videos;
  • orchestral and cinematic intros;
  • folk and acoustic content;
  • DJ mixes with B minor or A major.

D major and D minor

D major sounds confident and sunny, and Baroque composers often used it for trumpet parts. D minor, with one flat, is darker and more dramatic, a common key for film music and requiems. In Camelot notation D major is 10B and D minor is 7A. For mixing, a track in D sits well next to one in A or G, which share most of its notes.
