Staff picks
B sits one step below C. B major needs five sharps and sounds bright and intense, while B minor, with two sharps, has a noble, melancholic color that composers from Bach to Tchaikovsky have used for big emotional works.
What music in B suits
- dramatic and cinematic scenes;
- emotional trailers and reveals;
- electronic and trance tracks;
- DJ sets with G sharp minor or D major.
B major and B minor
B major is less common in pop but strong in dance music and film scores. B minor shares its notes with D major, its relative major. In Camelot notation B major is 1B and B minor is 10A, so a mix can move from B minor into D major without a clash. On guitar, B major takes barre chords, so rock uses it less often than E or A.
