Underscore is the film and TV term for music that plays under a scene: under dialogue, a voiceover or an interview. It supports the mood without asking for attention, so it avoids busy melodies and sudden changes and leaves room for speech.
Where underscore is used
- interviews, documentaries and corporate films;
- podcasts and audiobooks;
- tutorials, explainers and online courses;
- dialogue scenes in short films and series.
What makes good underscore
Good underscore stays in a narrow range, avoids sharp hits and keeps its main melody low or leaves it out entirely. It should support the mood of the scene and be easy to fade in and out between lines, so the editor can follow the dialogue rather than the music.
Generate an underscore track
Describe the scene and keep it simple, for example quiet underscore with soft pads and light piano under an interview. Mubert Render makes a new track, and you can set the length to match the cut. For narration-heavy projects, see the Podcast theme.
