Staff picks
Psytrance, or psychedelic trance, grew out of Goa trance in the 1990s. It runs fast, usually somewhere around 140 to 150 BPM, on a rolling bassline that hits between the kicks, with layers of squelchy synths and effects building on top. The result is hypnotic and full of motion.
Good uses for psytrance
- festival aftermovies and rave recaps;
- extreme sports, drone and FPV footage;
- quick-cut gaming montages;
- visualizers and VJ loops.
What makes it psytrance
The groove comes from the bass: short notes that fill the gaps between kicks and keep the energy rolling without a break. On top sit acid lines, swirling effects and long builds rather than big vocal hooks. Full-on styles are bright and bouncy, while darker forest styles get faster and more twisted.
Make a psytrance track
Ask for something like dark psytrance at 145 BPM with a rolling bassline for a drone video, or choose the genre and a mood. Mubert Render creates a fresh track to fit. For the melodic, uplifting side of the style, browse Trance.
