The Berghain resident Sergey Kushnir, aka Etapp Kyle, is one of the most famous Ukrainian DJs and producers. Sergey has been engaged in music since childhood, and right after he discovered electronic sound in a club in Chernivtsi, he began to mix his own tracks and very soon became the resident of local venues. In 2009, he took up production, actively looking for his own sound. Two years later he was presented to the ARMA17 residents, and since then he began to actively perform in Moscow. At the same time, Etapp Kyle’s recordings were presented to Richie Hawtin and Ben Klock, who were very inspired by the work of the young artist: Ben Klock signed the artist for Klockworks, and Richie invited Sergey to the ENTER, event in Ibiza, which was his first international gig. Next is the opening of the showcase in Beghain, and since 2015 Etapp Kyle is the resident of this club.
Etapp Kyle’s music can be described as figurative – it draws out pure and explorative cosmic landscapes in your mind. His techno is not only about rhythm and melody, its full of metaphors and images, which makes it hypnotic. The key to such result is covered in painstaking work with the sound.
Sergey Kushnir also has a developed director’s vision, which can be seen in his recent NOLOVE video. It is an extensive creative work inspired by homecoming. According to the artist, they filmed a large amount of material, which could not fit into the framework of one clip. There are still interesting shots, photos and interviews that we hope will find their place in the future Etapp Kyle’s directorial work.
A surprising fact is that Sergey didn’t write any new samples for the Mubert project – all the tracks are unfinished works, which were created in the last couple of years but had never been finished. He emphasizes that it was a great experience of ‘recycling’ unreleased work files that he would have never got back to otherwise. This collaboration is the starting point of a new concept of ‘zero-waste’ music industry.
