Tempo

0 BPM

0 taps

This BPM tapper does one job. You play a song, tap along to the beat, and it tells you the tempo in beats per minute. It also shows which genres usually sit at that tempo. Then it puts the number into the generator above, so you can make an original track at the same speed.

How to find the BPM of a song with the BPM tapper

    1. Play the song and listen for the kick drum or the snare.
    2. Tap the big button (or press Space) on every beat. Start on a strong beat if you can.
    3. Keep going for ten taps or more. The number settles as you tap.
    4. If the result looks twice too fast or too slow, press Half or Double.
    5. Stop for three seconds, and the next tap starts a new count.

How the BPM tapper works out the tempo

Every tap records the gap since the one before. The BPM tapper averages the last four gaps and turns the average into beats per minute: 60,000 milliseconds divided by the gap. For example, a gap of 500 milliseconds is 120 BPM. Averaging four gaps smooths out a slightly early or late tap. However, a gap more than 20% away from the average means the tempo itself changed, so the number jumps straight to the new tempo instead of drifting there. DAWs behave the same way: in Ableton Live, for instance, the session tempo follows your taps when you hit the tap button on each beat.

    Tempo of popular genres

These are the ranges producers usually work in. However, plenty of songs sit outside them, so treat the table as a starting point, not a rule. For the story behind each style, see our guide to the most popular music genres.

Half time and double time in the BPM tapper

Some genres feel slower than their tempo. Dubstep runs around 140 BPM, but the snare lands on the third beat of each bar instead of the second and fourth, so your body hears 70. Similarly, trap races its hi-hats at double speed over a slow beat. If you tap the snare in a half-time track, you get half the written tempo. Neither answer is wrong. In the BPM tapper, the Half and Double buttons switch between the two readings, and DJs pick whichever matches the songs they want to mix. If you produce dance music, our guide on how to make EDM covers how tempo shapes a drop.

Make a track at the tempo the BPM tapper found

Once you know the BPM, the generator at the top of this page already has it in the prompt, together with the genre that fits. Change the words if you like, keep the number, and Mubert Render makes an original instrumental at that tempo, at the exact length you set. As a result, it is handy when a video is cut to a song you cannot use, or when you need a backing track that matches a dance routine or a workout. What BPM means, and what is normal

BPM stands for beats per minute. In other words, it is the speed of the pulse you tap your foot to, so a song at 120 BPM has two beats every second. Most pop songs sit between 100 and 130 BPM. Meanwhile, slow ballads and R&B often go below 80, dance music sits between 118 and 140, and drum and bass goes up to 180.

Tapping versus reading the tempo from audio

For finding a song’s tempo, tapping is accurate enough as long as you tap for a dozen beats or more. For beatmatching, though, DJ software reads the tempo from the audio itself. So use the BPM tapper to find a number quickly, and let the software fine-tune it.
