Luckily for Olympic gold medal-winning Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie, he was often able to listen to his favorite pop song \u201cScatman\u201d playing around the stadium, while breaking world records.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A science of choosing an effective exercise soundtrack<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Numerous studies conducted by Professor of Sport and Exercise Psychology Costas Karageorghis over a 25-year period show that music can make running feel more enjoyable, reducing perceived exertion up to 12% if the runner selects music of her\/his taste and in line with running intensity.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesportjournal.org\/article\/music-sport-and-exercise-update-research-and-application\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">According to a 2008 review of research by Costas Karageorghis and David-Lee Priest<\/a>,\u00a0during moderate exercise, music can \u201cnarrow attention\u201d, diverting \u201cthe mind from sensations of fatigue.\u201d But when you increase the speed and intensity of a workout, \u201cperceptions of fatigue override the impact of music, because attentional processes are dominated by physiological feedback.\u201d Nevertheless, 61 percent of people listen to something while running, according to a 2016\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/runners-stories\/a20825842\/the-state-of-the-american-runner-2016\/\">survey<\/a>,\u00a0conducted by Runner\u2019s World.<\/p>\n<p>Music is a type of legal performance-enhancing drug<\/p>\n<p>In his book \u201cApplying Music in Exercise and Sport\u201d, Professor Karageorghis explains that music has a direct influence on pleasure centers of the brain without a need for a great deal of processing higher up in the cortex.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMusic helps to induce alpha brain wave activity which is responsible for our dreams and rest states. This leads to a state known as \u2018flow,\u2019 which is an ultimate motivational state in which sportspeople are wholly immersed in what they are doing and feel as if they are functioning on autopilot.\u201d writes Professor Karageorghis. In other words, music illuminates the perceived exhaustion by \u201ccoloring\u201d the fatigue-related signals and makes exercise more pleasurable.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Our bodies are made to be moved by music<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Human heart \u2018likes\u2019 to synchronize with music. Soundtrack with a specific BPM performs a metronomic function, which helps to illuminate the inconsistencies of human locomotion. It increases the biomechanical efficiency of the body, which results in better use of oxygen. It also roughly corresponds to the average person\u2019s heart rate during a routine 20 minutes workout.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Here is how you can measure your running BPM<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Set a stopwatch for 60 seconds and start running on the spot at your average, natural pace.<\/li>\n<li>Count the number of times your right foot strikes the ground.<\/li>\n<li>Take that number and double it (one needs two feet to run, after all). That\u2019s your natural cadence in beats per minute for a regular run.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>How many BPM is enough?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Well, Mubert for Running has got this matter covered.
