The 608 of them with public play counters had about 86.8 million plays between them. Ordering a new one from Russian creators cost 999 to 30,000 rubles (about $11 to $330). So this post is for anyone who makes, uploads or distributes AI music, with the full timeline, what the platforms caught (very little) and the rules likely to land on everyone else.

Our favourite detail is a small one. Terrecon uploaded one of its own test AI propaganda songs to SoundCloud, lyrics calling for violence included, and the description openly called it propaganda. SoundCloud did not flag it. That comes from a Forbes Ukraine column by Terrecon CEO Daria Verbytska. Delivery then took two hours to three days. The orders included anti-Western tracks, songs praising the army and one supporting the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia.

Four of the ten who didn’t take the job said no because they only write love songs and birthday greetings. Six never replied. Nobody, it seems, refused on principle.

The buyer supplies a few talking points, then the generator does the rest. Since Russia has no full local version of Suno or Udio, dev.ua reports, authors reach the Western services through local middlemen who handle access and payment around sanctions.

Most of the catalogue is small, though. Terrecon went through 3,725 Russian-language songs and flagged 981 as AI propaganda songs. The median for the 608 with stats was about 2,900 plays. Still, 204 passed 10,000 plays, 25 passed a million and the biggest got close to 4.7 million. Also, twelve accounts made 458 of the tracks, almost half the sample.

What happened so far

The story has been building for over a year, though most of the coverage arrived in October 2026.

Sept 25, 2025: Spotify announced a spam filter, support for AI credits in DDEX (the industry’s metadata standard) and the removal of over 75 million spammy tracks in 12 months.

July 21, 2026: Deezer said AI tracks were over half of its new daily uploads in June but drew only 1-3% of streams. It tags detected tracks and keeps them out of recommendations.

Oct 2, 2026: The New York Times reported Terrecon’s list of 981 AI propaganda songs, IMI noted. Most with a known release date came out after 2024. But the Kremlin’s role in spreading them is unclear.

Oct 30, 2026: Forbes Ukraine ran the pricing and distributor tests, and dev.ua picked up the $11 figure.

Later: Cybernews reported YouTube would review the findings, while SoundCloud, Suno and Udio did not respond.

Ynet’s write-up adds a Suno-made tribute to artillery with more than 2 million YouTube views over two years. Some tracks came down only after the NYT asked the platforms about them, according to Forbes Ukraine. Asking worked. Detection didn’t.

The generators filtered words, not meaning

Suno blocked a profane English prompt and then accepted the same request in Russian. According to Cybernews, it swapped out the trigger words but kept “the overall meaning and intent”. Udio generated a track with direct calls to kill Ukrainians “without any restrictions,” Terrecon says. Mureka and ElevenLabs also gave in on the second try. Google Flow Music failed for technical reasons before the test finished, which isn’t the same as passing.

IMI’s summary of the NYT piece puts it plainly: the filters reacted to “specific banned words rather than the overall meaning of the prompts.” A keyword blocklist that works in one language is a bouncer who only reads English IDs. So anyone with a Russian passport walks straight in.

Three distributors, three answers on AI propaganda songs

A distributor is the company that sends your track to Spotify and the rest. This is where the test split. Amuse and the Russian service Sferoom refused both test tracks, citing their own rules. But DistroKid accepted both and sent them to YouTube Music, Spotify and Deezer, according to Terrecon. That account comes from a column by Terrecon’s own CEO, and we found no reply from DistroKid in the coverage, so treat it as one side of the story until the distributor says something.

The distributor has had a busy autumn, between UMG’s lawsuit and a new minority investor. So this adds a third item to its inbox.

Meanwhile, direct uploads did no better. YouTube added an AI label only after the analysts pointed out the generated cover art. The lyrics triggered nothing. Both YouTube and SoundCloud left the tracks up for weeks.

An AI tag on propaganda songs is not moderation

Deezer was the only service that labelled these AI propaganda songs as AI, per Cybernews. That shows how little AI detection fixes on its own. A tag says a model was involved. But it doesn’t say the chorus calls for killing people. IMI points out that most big platforms have hate-speech rules and few have anything on propaganda. They also miss slurs and idioms in other languages.

Verbytska is blunter. She told Cybernews that removing AI content isn’t in the platforms’ financial interest.

Our opinion: the fix most likely to arrive is the blunt one. Expect more AI flags, more disclosure fields and slower distributor checks for everyone who uses a generator. UMG’s boss already wants AI tracks to earn less per stream, and this story hands him a fresh example. So the lo-fi producer with a study stream gets extra paperwork. Meanwhile a human with a microphone can sing the same lyrics in Russian and no detector will notice, because the problem with AI propaganda songs was never the synth.

We should admit our own stake. Mubert generates music from samples that human artists upload and get paid for, so we can show where every track came from. Still, whatever rules come out of this will apply to us too.

What creators who use AI music should do now

Expect your distributor to ask more questions, and answer them honestly. Since Spotify is building AI credits on the DDEX standard and Deezer tags what it detects, disclosed or not, hiding AI use gets you nothing at all. Disclosing costs one line.

Keep a record of each generated track: the tool, the date, the prompt and the licence. If a platform starts treating anything AI-made as suspect, that file turns a takedown into a five-minute appeal. Also read your distributor’s content rules once. Amuse and DistroKid gave different answers to the same two tracks.

Then watch what you upload in bulk. Twelve accounts made almost half of Terrecon’s sample of AI propaganda songs, and mass uploads are what Spotify’s spam filter was built to catch.

If a platform ever offers to promote your track before checking what it says, that tells you something about the platform. It tells you nothing about the track.

Terrecon, a Kyiv-based research group, found 981 AI propaganda songs on Spotify, YouTube, Deezer and SoundCloud with 86.8 million plays, and new ones cost from about $11 to order.
