This post is for creators, small brands and musicians posting on TikTok in 2026 who want the For You feed to show their videos to strangers. (The For You feed is TikTok’s main scroll: the endless stream of videos from accounts you don’t follow.) We go through what TikTok itself says its system rewards, how a new account gets its first 1,000 views, why posting at 7:03 p.m. because a chart said so is mostly superstition, and how to pick a sound without joining a queue.

Everything here comes from TikTok’s own pages. We left out the statistics that float around creator forums, because we couldn’t trace a single one back to anyone who measured anything. So if you want to know how to get views on TikTok from the people who run TikTok, this is that, minus the hype.

How to get views on TikTok starts with who the feed tests

TikTok explained its recommendation system in a newsroom post in June 2020, and it still points people to it. Its system ranks videos by how likely each viewer is to care about them. Three groups of inputs feed that ranking.

First come user interactions: the videos people like or share, the accounts they follow, the comments they post. Then comes video information, which TikTok describes as “details like captions, sounds, and hashtags.” Device and account settings, such as language, country and phone type, also count, but TikTok says they get lower weight than everything else.

Creators tend to skip the next part. TikTok writes that while bigger accounts get more views because they have bigger audiences, “neither follower count nor whether the account has had previous high-performing videos are direct factors.”

Read it twice. It turns how to get views on TikTok from a numbers game into an editing problem. A new account isn’t punished for being new. It isn’t helped either. Each video gets judged roughly on its own, which is good news delivered in the tone of a letter from the tax office.

We learned this the slow way. Early on we joined a follow-for-follow thread, convinced that a bigger number on the profile would open the feed’s doors. It got us followers who never watched anything. Nobody was impressed, least of all the feed, because an audience that doesn’t watch is a restaurant full of mannequins.

Watching to the end is the signal TikTok names

TikTok’s post gives one example of a strong signal, and it’s specific: “whether a user finishes watching a longer video from beginning to end.” The company says that kind of signal gets “greater weight than a weak indicator,” and the weak one it picks is whether the viewer and creator live in the same country.

So the plain version is this. A finished video is the clearest yes a viewer can give. If you take one thing from this post on how to get views on TikTok, take that.

In practice, finishing comes down to how you edit. A few habits help:

Cut the first second of throat-clearing. “Hey guys, so today” costs you viewers who never learn what today is.

Show the payoff, or a piece of it, before you explain it.

Make the video as long as the idea and no longer. A 40-second idea stretched to 90 seconds gets watched for 40.

End where a rewatch feels natural, so the loop doesn’t jolt anyone.

A small tangent. The 2020 post is ancient in TikTok years, from back when the app was mostly dances and the word “creator” still sounded like a job title from a sci-fi film. TikTok hasn’t published a newer explainer of the same kind, so the old one is still the best primary source anyone has. Anyway.

TikTok Studio shows the second viewers leave

Your analytics will tell you where people leave. TikTok Studio, the creator dashboard TikTok launched in May 2024 for creators aged 18 and over, shows how each video performed and how your audience behaves. It also runs on desktop at tiktok.com/tiktokstudio.

Look at your last five videos together, not one. One video is an anecdote. Five with the same drop at the same second is a pattern, and patterns are cheap to fix: trim the opening, re-film it, or move the payoff forward. If most viewers leave at the same moment in every video, the problem isn’t the algorithm.

It’s that second.

Most advice on how to get views on TikTok stops at “post more”, and this is the part it skips. Posting more videos with the same leak just leaks faster.

How to get your first 1,000 views on TikTok as a new account

Your first thousand views come from strangers, because you don’t have anyone else yet. For a new account, how to get views on TikTok is mostly a matching problem. The system needs a reason to show your video to the right strangers, and that reason is the video information: what you say in the caption, the sound you use, the hashtags, the topic.

So pick one topic and stay on it for a while. When every video is about the same thing (sourdough, guitar pedals, cheap flights out of Lisbon), the system has an easier time matching you with people who watch that thing. An account that jumps from skincare to football to your nephew’s birthday gives it nothing to match.

Captions do more work than people think. Write the words a viewer would type to find the video, not a joke only your friends will get. Series help for the same reason. Part one finds a viewer, and part two gives that viewer something to finish.

The thousand-view mark is also where people start asking what TikTok pays. We covered that separately: how much TikTok Creator Rewards pays per 1,000 views, and which views it won’t count.

A quiet TikTok video isn’t always a broken one

Then comes patience, which nobody wants to hear. Still, it’s the dullest and most accurate part of how to get views on TikTok, because TikTok’s own explanation says videos that have just been uploaded or are still under review may not be eligible for recommendation yet. A video that sits still for the first stretch isn’t necessarily dead. It may be queued.

TikTok’s For You feed standards page puts it bluntly: “If a video isn’t getting many views, it also doesn’t necessarily mean it broke a rule.” Your analytics, according to the same page, show whether any of your videos were made ineligible for recommendation. Check there before you rewrite your whole personality.

Don’t delete and repost. TikTok says it doesn’t recommend “duplicated content, content you’ve already seen before, or any content that’s considered spam.” We tried it once with the same clip and a new caption, on the theory that the caption was the problem. Wrong theory. The second copy did worse than the first.

Reposting and engagement bait take you out of the For You feed

Two rules in TikTok’s Community Guidelines on integrity and authenticity decide a lot of quiet failures. Neither gets your video removed. Instead, both make it ineligible for the For You feed, which for views is nearly the same thing.

The first: “Content is also ineligible for the FYF if it includes unoriginal or reused material without anything new.” FYF is TikTok’s shorthand for the For You feed. So a reupload of someone else’s clip with your watermark on top doesn’t qualify. A reaction, a stitch or a breakdown that adds your own take is a different case, because “without anything new” is exactly the test it passes.

The second: “Content that tries to manipulate people into giving gifts or inflating likes or follows isn’t eligible for the FYF.” We read like-for-like threads and “follow me or the puppy cries” videos as sitting on the wrong side of that line. The puppy is fine. Nobody needs to rule on it, since the video won’t reach the feed anyway.

Both rules point the same way as the completion signal. Funny, that. The system wants videos people chose to watch, made by someone who added something. Every shortcut tries to fake one of those two things, and TikTok has written the fake into the rulebook. That leaves a short, unglamorous answer to how to get views on TikTok without tricks: make the thing people stay for.

Posting times matter less than the charts say

Every few months a new chart goes around with the best hour to post on TikTok, down to the minute. We went looking for the source. TikTok’s own newsroom and guidelines pages don’t name a best time anywhere.

It isn’t there.

Those charts come from third-party tools averaging other people’s accounts, with other people’s audiences in other time zones. So no chart can honestly claim the hour decides how to get views on TikTok for your account.

Timing still does something, though. When the people who already watch you are awake, the video gets its first watches sooner, and those watches feed the same signals as everything else. Followers aren’t a direct ranking factor, but they are often the first people in the room.

Use your own numbers instead of someone else’s average. TikTok Studio’s audience insights show when your viewers are around. Pick a slot that fits them and keep it for two weeks. Then move it and compare. If nothing changes, the hour wasn’t your problem, and you can post whenever you finish editing.

The honest version, which no chart will sell you: a good video posted at a bad time usually beats a weak video posted at the perfect one. (We have posted weak videos at the perfect time. They stayed weak, on schedule.)

How to get views on TikTok with sounds without copying everyone

Sounds are part of the video information TikTok reads, which is why they turn up in every guide on how to get views on TikTok. They help the system work out what your video is and who might want it. A trending sound also gives you a second door: people browsing that sound’s page can find you there.

The catch sits in the same newsroom post. TikTok says the feed “generally won’t show two videos in a row made with the same sound or by the same creator.” Good for viewers. Less good for you. A trending sound puts you in a big crowd that the feed deliberately spaces out, and it lines you up against everyone else who had the same idea this week.

So use trends when the sound actually fits the video, not as a ticket. A sound that matches the edit keeps people watching, and watching is the signal that counts.

Brands get bitten by the licence question harder than anyone. TikTok’s own business blog says its Commercial Music Library holds “more than 600,000 tracks pre-cleared for royalty-free use in branded content and ads.” Songs in the general music library, by the same blog’s account, are “not pre-cleared for commercial content,” and using that library through a personal account to promote a business puts you “at risk of copyright infringement.” If you sell anything, the hit song in your draft is probably the one you can’t use.

An original sound sends TikTok views back to you

A sound of your own is the other way to get views on TikTok, and how it works is simple. When you post with original audio, the sound page carries your name, so anyone who borrows it sends viewers back to you. There’s no crowd to be spaced out from either. Not until someone borrows it, which is the point.

That’s where a generator like Mubert Render fits: describe a mood, genre or tempo and get an original track at the exact length of your video. It’s built from samples by real artists, who get paid for them. Commercial use is covered by the platform licence, and its exact scope depends on the plan, so read yours. In Mubert’s own data for the last 28 days, about one in five tracks generated in Render were re-cut to another duration. Creators trim music to the edit. Right way round.

How to get views on TikTok from search, slowly

The For You feed is fast and forgetful. Search is slow. It keeps paying, because someone types the same question next month and finds the same video. Of all the answers to how to get views on TikTok, it’s the only one that adds up over time.

TikTok built a tool for this. Creator Search Insights, announced in March 2024, shows what people search for on TikTok. It also has a filter for content gap topics, which TikTok describes as topics “searched for often, but aren’t featured in a large number of videos.” To reach it, type “Creator Search Insights” into the TikTok search bar. It’s available in select regions, so it may not show up for you.

A content gap is the closest thing TikTok offers to a free lane. Make the video people are searching for and can’t find. Say the search phrase out loud in the first seconds, and write it in the caption, because the caption is video information the system reads.

Search won’t make you viral by Thursday. Still, it’s how a small account keeps getting views from videos it posted months ago, while the trend chasers start from zero every morning.

If TikTok is one of several platforms for you, most of how to get views on TikTok carries over. Completion and a clear topic matter on YouTube too, and our breakdown of what YouTube pays per 1,000 views explains why Shorts views earn far less than long-form ones.

Posting the same clips elsewhere, or ready to earn from them?
