Then you type a smaller one because the first felt greedy, and you hit send before you can think about it.

This post is for YouTube, TikTok and Instagram creators who have done exactly that. It shows how to set sponsorship rates from your own analytics: a price per 1,000 views, a price per video, and the extra lines most first quotes leave out (usage rights, exclusivity, paid ads and the music under your voice).

We tried to build this post around a table of “going rates”. It went badly. Every table we found was someone’s survey of someone else’s creators, with a method we couldn’t check. So we deleted it.

That turned out to be the point. A table of average sponsorship rates tells you what a stranger with a different audience was paid. Your own sponsorship rates come from your views, your niche and what the brand plans to do with the video after you post it.

Sponsorship rates start with views you can prove

Brands buy attention, and they count it the way advertisers always have. Per thousand. CPM stands for cost per mille, the price of 1,000 views. Most sponsorship rates come down to that one division, because even a brand paying a flat fee still divides the fee by the views it got. Then it decides if you were cheap or expensive. So do the division before they do.

Don’t divide by your best video. Divide by your typical one. Take your last 10 to 15 regular uploads and leave out the one that went viral and the one about your cat. Then find the median views at 30 days.

Use the median, not the average. A single viral hit in an average works like a lottery win in your salary history: true, technically, and useless to anyone planning a budget. Also, a brand that pays for your average and gets your median will remember it.

Then it will stop replying.

Next, pick a CPM and multiply. Here is a worked example with round numbers picked to make the arithmetic easy, so don’t read them as a market quote. Your median video gets 40,000 views in 30 days and you set a CPM of $25. A dedicated video then costs 40 × $25 = $1,000. If your median doubles next year, your sponsorship rates double with it, and nobody needs an awkward call about why.

Niche sets sponsorship rates more than subscriber count

The CPM itself is a judgement call. Still, it rests on two things you can actually look at: what your audience already earns you elsewhere (the next section), and what a customer is worth to brands in your niche.

A finance channel whose viewers open brokerage accounts can carry a higher CPM than a channel of teenagers watching speedruns. Why is simple. The brand earns more from each viewer who signs up, so niche moves sponsorship rates far more than subscriber count does.

Subscribers barely enter into it. A channel with 300,000 subscribers and 8,000 views a video is selling 8,000 views. After all, the brand’s spreadsheet has no column for subscribers who stopped watching in 2021.

Your own ad revenue is the floor, not the price

Every platform that pays creators already shows you a version of your CPM from the other side. On YouTube it is RPM. That’s your revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube takes its share. We broke down how it varies in our guide to YouTube RPM by niche and country. The same logic also applies to what TikTok Creator Rewards pays per 1,000 views and to Facebook’s payouts.

That number is the floor for your sponsorship rates. A sponsor segment takes screen time you would otherwise fill with something your audience came for. It also costs a script, a shoot, a round of brand edits and a little viewer patience. So when a brand’s offer puts your sponsorship rates per 1,000 views below your ad RPM, it is asking you to pay to advertise its product.

A sponsorship should sit well above the floor because the two products are different. Ad revenue is what’s left over from an auction across millions of anonymous slots. A sponsorship, by contrast, is your voice recommending a product to people who chose to listen to you. Brands know the difference and price it.

You should too.

A small detour on the word itself. “Mille” is Latin for thousand, which makes CPM the only part of influencer marketing that sounds like monks invented it. It actually comes from print and broadcast advertising, which sold attention per thousand readers long before anyone had a channel. Anyway.

Showing your RPM to a brand is a mistake, in our view. It tells them the lowest number you could survive on. Then it invites them to negotiate down to it. Instead, keep it on your own sheet as the line your sponsorship rates won’t cross, and quote your CPM.

Sponsorship rates per video or per 1,000 views depend on how your views age

A flat fee per video and a payment per 1,000 views use the same maths. They just put the risk in different places. With a flat fee you carry none of it: 10,000 views or 100,000, the brand pays the same. With pay per view the brand carries none, because you’re paid for what actually showed up, usually counted on a fixed day.

The right model for your sponsorship rates depends on how your views behave over time. Search-driven videos (tutorials, reviews, anything starting with “how to”) keep collecting views for months, so a count on day 30 undersells them. Feed videos are different. On TikTok, Reels and Shorts they tend to spike in the first days and then flatten, so a count on day 7 catches most of what they will ever do.

That gives a rough rule. Long-form evergreen channels should prefer a flat fee priced on the 30-day median, because the brand gets the long tail for free. That’s also your argument against a discount.

Short-form channels with unpredictable reach do better with a hybrid instead: a smaller guaranteed fee, plus a CPM bonus for views above an agreed threshold. The guarantee pays for your work. The bonus pays out if the algorithm decides you’re today’s thing.

Shorts, Reels and mentions need their own sponsorship rates

Vertical video needs its own price. A 45-second integration in a Short isn’t a third of a 10-minute dedicated video. Nor is a 60-second mention inside a long video the same thing as a whole Reel built around the product. So quote them as separate items, each with its own view median, because each one reaches a different crowd. Mentions sit below a dedicated video. Not as far below as the brand will suggest.

Also write down where the view count comes from: an analytics screenshot on day 30, or the platform’s insights sharing if you’ve turned it on. Otherwise the brand will use the public counter on whatever day its finance team gets round to it. That day is never a good one.

The price per video is the cheap part of the contract

First quotes go wrong right here. Your fee covers making one video and posting it on your channel. That’s all. Brands often want more, though, and sponsorship rates that only cover the video leave money on the table. Every extra either earns the brand more or stops you from earning elsewhere.

Usage rights: the brand reposts your video on its own accounts or site. Price it by the month. Three months and “in perpetuity” are different deals.

Paid ads: the brand puts money behind your video. That makes your face ad inventory, so charge a monthly percentage of the base fee while the ads run.

Exclusivity: no competing brands for a set number of weeks, priced at the deals you’ll turn down.

Extras: a story, a pinned comment, a link in bio, raw footage for the brand’s own edit.

Revisions and rush: one round included, more billed, and a fee for anything due early.

Quote each one as its own line. Give some away later if you like, but let the brand see what it’s getting for free first. A discount the brand can see counts as a favour. But a right you forgot to list is simply gone.

Raw footage needs a second look. When the brand re-cuts your clips into its own ad, it keeps everything in them. Including the track playing under your voice. Nobody prices that line.

Music is the line nobody puts on the rate card

A sponsored video is commercial use of everything in it. Music included. So a lot of music that’s fine on your normal uploads stops being fine once a brand pays for the video. We’ve read more of this fine print than is healthy, so here’s the short version.

TikTok says it plainly. Its Commercial Music Library help page says businesses “cannot use the general music library for commercial usage”. It also lists branded content among the activities that should use the Commercial Music Library instead.

Then there is reach. TikTok’s content disclosure page for creators adds that commercial content which isn’t properly disclosed “may not be eligible for distribution in the For You feed”. As a result, a trending sound with no paid-partnership label can cost you the music and the reach in one go.

Platform libraries also have edges. TikTok’s page talks about commercial activity on TikTok. It says nothing about the brand’s website or its YouTube ads. So if your contract includes usage rights, check that the music licence travels as far as the video does. If it doesn’t, the person who picked the track (you) gets the email.

Copyright claims on sponsored videos are common enough to price

Claims are not rare. In Mubert’s own data for the last 28 days, 25.4% of results from our copyright checker found a rights holder’s claim on the uploaded track, down slightly from 26% before. That’s about one in four. On a normal upload a claim means lost revenue. On a sponsored video, though, it means explaining to a brand manager why their ad is now earning money for a record label.

So sponsorship rates that ignore music are missing a line. Either the brand supplies cleared music and the licence spells out where it can be used, or you supply it and charge for it.

Our own answer is Mubert Render. Describe the mood or the video and you get an original track at the exact length of the segment, composed from samples by artists who are paid for them. It’s cleared for commercial use under the platform licence. The scope depends on your plan, though, so compare it with what the brand’s contract asks for.

Streamers have it harder. After all, a sponsored stream is hours of commercial use. We covered what Twitch streamers can actually play separately.

Disclosure rules change the sponsorship rates maths

Disclosure is a legal requirement, and it also changes what you’re selling. In the US, the FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers says that in a video “the disclosure should be in the video and not just in the description”. In a live stream, it “should be repeated periodically” so that viewers who join late still hear it.

Creators outside the US aren’t exempt either. US law applies “if it’s reasonably foreseeable that the post will affect U.S. consumers.”

The same page says a “material connection” includes free or discounted products. So “we’ll send you one for free” is a payment with a disclosure obligation attached and no fee. Price it as a deal or decline it politely. Free stuff doesn’t pay rent.

Platforms add their own switch. On YouTube you mark the video as a paid promotion in YouTube Studio, which adds a disclosure label at the start. On TikTok you turn on the content disclosure setting, and then the post shows “Paid partnership”. Even so, the FTC warns: “Don’t assume that a platform’s disclosure tool is good enough.” Use the toggle and also say it out loud in the first seconds.

This matters for your sponsorship rates because a disclosed video reads as an ad from its first second, and that costs you some attention. So build that cost into the CPM rather than hiding the disclosure. A brand that asks you to soften or skip it wants you to take legal risk on its behalf. That isn’t a line item.

It’s a no.

Platform marketplaces show you a number, not the number

YouTube runs its own brand-deal marketplace, now called Creator Partnerships. According to its help page, you need to be at least 18, in the YouTube Partner Program, based in one of 24 listed countries and free of active Community Guidelines strikes. Brands pay you directly. You negotiate the contract with them.

One line on that page is worth framing. The amounts shown in a brand inquiry “are provided by the advertiser and are not meant to be confused with final offers.” In other words, YouTube is politely telling you the number is an opening bid. So treat it as one, and answer with your sheet rather than a yes.

TikTok’s marketplace, TikTok One, handles disclosure for you: the creator help page says all TikTok One projects switch the branded content disclosure on automatically. Convenient. Still, it doesn’t set your sponsorship rates, your usage rights or your music, so those stay on your side of the table.

Set the floor of a quote from what the platforms already pay you. See what YouTube pays per 1,000 views. To put numbers on it, try our short video earnings calculator.

A checklist for setting your sponsorship rates this week

Pull the 30-day views of your last 10 to 15 regular videos and write down the median.

Look up your ad RPM for the same videos and mark it as the floor you won’t go below.

Pick a CPM above that floor and multiply it by your median to price a dedicated video.

Price Shorts, Reels and mid-video mentions as separate items with their own medians.

That’s the base. Now the lines that make it a real quote:

Add priced lines for usage rights, paid ads, exclusivity, extra revisions and rush delivery.

Decide who supplies the music in sponsored videos and check the licence covers every place the brand will use them.

Write a disclosure line to say in the first seconds, and turn on each platform’s paid-partnership setting.

Save your sponsorship rates as a one-page sheet, so the next “send over your rates” gets a link instead of a number you type and delete.

A brand asks for your rates and you guess a number.
