Lofi (short for “low fidelity”) is the dusty, relaxed hip hop people put on while studying, streaming or pretending to study. This post is for beginners and creators who want to know how to make lofi beats of their own instead of borrowing someone else’s. It goes from an empty project to a finished loop. No studio required. Along the way you get the free tools for each step, plus the sampling rules that decide whether the beat is really yours.

Lofi is a sound made of deliberate damage

The recipe is short. Jazzy chords, drums that sit slightly behind the beat, a bass line that stays out of the way, and a layer of noise. The tempo is slow, usually around 70 to 90 BPM (beats per minute). The flaws aren’t mistakes. They’re the genre.

The best-known shop window is Lofi Girl, formerly ChilledCow, which built a huge audience on two round-the-clock YouTube streams, one for studying and one for sleeping, as Music Ally described it. Plenty of people want to know how to make lofi that sounds like those streams. The animated girl has been doing the same homework for years. She still hasn’t finished.

A confession to start. Our first try at the genre came out too clean. Every note sat on the grid, every hi-hat was equally loud, and the piano was bright and expensive. It sounded like a hotel lobby trying to relax. Nobody would study to it. You might check in to it.

So learning how to make lofi is mostly learning which polish to take off. You remove it in a controlled way. Carefully, one layer at a time. Stop when the track feels like a memory of a song rather than a recording of one.

How to make lofi on the computer you already own

You don’t need a studio. You need a DAW (digital audio workstation: the app where you arrange, record and mix music), headphones you know well, and a couple of free plugins. That’s it. Anyone can learn how to make lofi on a five-year-old laptop, because the genre runs on taste rather than processing power.

On a Mac, GarageBand costs nothing. Its App Store page lists it as free and describes Drummer, a feature that drops ready-played drum grooves into your song. On Windows, any DAW with a trial or lite version will do. Lofi barely touches the features you’d be paying for anyway.

Then there’s the dust. iZotope’s Vinyl plugin has been the go-to freebie for years, and iZotope still offers it as a free download. One of its controls picks the era of the record player. According to KVR’s listing, it runs from modern turntables all the way back to 1930s phonographs. Pick your decade of dust.

The whole kit, then:

a DAW (GarageBand is fine)

a piano or electric piano

one soft, dull drum kit

iZotope Vinyl or a tape plugin

headphones you know by heart

Second confession. Before we knew what a low-pass filter did, we bought a plugin bundle. Most of it is still unopened. Start with the free stuff. Buy something only once you can name the exact problem it fixes.

Four chords and a slightly wrong piano

Most guides on how to make lofi start with drums. We start with chords, because they carry most of the mood. Lofi borrows from jazz, so swap plain triads (three-note chords) for seventh and ninth chords, which stack one or two extra notes on top. Try Dm7, G7, Cmaj7, Am7. It already sounds like a rainy café, because jazz has been using that move for about a century.

Then spread the notes out. Move the lowest note down an octave and hand it to the bass. Keep three or four notes in the middle and drop anything that clutters the top. Dense voicings sound like a church organ. Open ones sound like someone thinking.

Pick the instrument by temperature. Electric piano is warm. Felt piano is soft and close, and a nylon-string guitar works if you want something less expected. Whatever you choose, roll off the brightness later instead of picking a dark sound now, since that leaves you more control.

Now break the piano a little. Turn quantize off (quantize snaps notes to the grid), or set it to 50-70% strength so notes only get nudged closer. Vary the velocity, which is how hard each key is hit. Play the chords on a cheap MIDI keyboard if you have one. Badly is fine. Bad timing from a human usually sounds more lofi than perfect timing drawn with a mouse.

Last trick: detune the instrument by a few cents (a cent is a hundredth of a semitone). The ear notices something is off. It can’t say what.

How to make lofi melodies that hum instead of sing

The melody is where beginners try hardest, and that’s the problem. A lofi melody is closer to someone humming while they wash up than to a singer at the front of a stage. So the honest answer to how to make lofi melodies is short. Write less.

Stay inside a pentatonic scale, a five-note scale with no clashing notes, which makes wrong notes nearly impossible. Use the top notes of your chords as a guide and move in small steps. Leave whole bars empty. Silence is part of the phrase, and the listener’s brain fills it in for free.

Repetition helps too. Write a two-bar idea, repeat it, then change only its last note the second time round. That tiny change does more than a whole new melody would.

The sound matters as much as the notes. Try a muted guitar, a soft flute, a music box or a hum recorded on your phone. Filter it like everything else. Then turn it down. If the melody is the loudest thing in the mix, it’s too loud. It should sit beside the chords, not on top of them.

We once wrote a melody with a key change in it. In a lofi track. We don’t talk about it.

How to make lofi drums that sound late for class

Lofi drums follow one rule. Nothing hurries.

Keep the pattern simple. Kick on beat one and somewhere around beat three, snare on two and four, hi-hats in eighth notes. Then add swing, which delays every second hi-hat slightly so the rhythm bounces instead of marching. Turn it up until the hats stop sounding like a metronome. After that, back off a notch.

Next, drag the snare a few milliseconds late. Not enough to sound wrong. Just enough to sound tired. Turn down every other hi-hat as well. Real drummers don’t hit each one equally hard, and evenly loud hats are the quickest way to tell anyone with ears that a laptop played this beat, not a person. In GarageBand’s Drummer, pick a laid-back preset and lower its complexity before touching anything else.

Half of how to make lofi drums is choosing sounds. Patterns are the easy half. You want a kick with a round low end and a quick decay. The snare should sound like it was recorded through a sock, and the hi-hats need their top end cut. Bright samples need help. Put a low-pass filter on them (a filter that lets lows through and cuts highs). Pull it down until the drum seems to play in the next room.

Somewhere, a jazz drummer is reading this and pointing out that people have played behind the beat for decades without anyone selling them a single plugin for it. Fair. Anyway.

Bass and texture fill the room, not the mix

Nobody asks how to make lofi bass sound impressive, and that’s correct. Play the root of each chord (the note the chord is named after). Follow the kick drum. Leave space. A sine-wave bass or a soft upright sample both work. If the bass is clearly audible on laptop speakers, it’s probably too loud for this genre.

Texture is the layer people remember without noticing. Vinyl crackle is the obvious choice. Usually the better one is something you record yourself: rain on a window, a kettle, traffic two floors down, the hum of your own room. Record a minute on your phone. Drop it under everything and turn it down until you only notice it when it stops.

Texture you recorded yourself is also yours outright. Remember that for the sampling section.

How to make lofi sound old without making it sound broken

This is the step where most people learning how to make lofi go too far. We did too. It sounded like a voicemail from a submarine.

Work in this order, and compare against the clean version after each step.

First, a gentle low-pass filter on the music bus (a channel that combines several tracks so you can process them together). It softens the top end. Next comes saturation, a mild distortion that adds warmth and glues the parts together. After that, wow and flutter: the slow and fast pitch wobble of old tape and records. Chords start to melt. Keep it so subtle you only notice it when it’s off.

Then the vinyl layer. iZotope Vinyl has a warp control that goes, in KVR’s words, all the way to “totally melted and warped”. Start much closer to zero. Bit-crushing (lowering the digital resolution so the sound turns grainy) is the strongest spice of all. Use it on one element, like the hi-hats, rather than the whole mix.

One more thing. Don’t crush the master with a limiter to make the track loud. Lofi is meant to breathe. A slammed master undoes all the softness you just built. If listeners start checking their headphones for damage, roll everything back by a third.

A loop needs small changes to survive two minutes

A lofi track is one loop. That’s exactly why it gets boring fast without an arrangement. Knowing how to make lofi loops last comes down to one cheap rule: change one thing every eight bars.

Start with the chords filtered and the drums off. Bring the drums in. Add the melody. Take the drums out for four bars near the middle, so their return feels like a reward. End with a tape stop (the sound of a tape machine slowing to a halt), or let the noise layer play out alone.

Two to three minutes is a normal length for a release. Videos are different. Background music has another job, because the length has to match the video, not the song. We’ve written about making music fit your video length exactly, and it’s more maths than you’d expect.

How to make lofi with samples you are allowed to use

Classic lofi chops up old jazz and soul records. That’s where the sound comes from. It’s also where most of the trouble comes from, so any honest guide on how to make lofi has to cover the legal part.

A sample of a commercial recording involves two sets of rights: the recording and the composition underneath it. Both usually need clearing. That goes for a release and for a monetized video. Skip it, and Content ID (YouTube’s automatic matching system) will find the sample long before any fan does. Distributors pull tracks too. We’ve covered how that plays out, including a song pulled for sampling a track from its future.

A clean catalogue doesn’t make you untouchable either. In July 2022 YouTube removed Lofi Girl’s two famous livestreams after a copyright claim, Digital Music News reported. The claim was bogus. YouTube later said the takedown requests were abusive and shut down the account that filed them, according to TechCrunch. So the biggest name in the genre got hit while doing everything right. A beat built on an uncleared record has much worse odds.

The safe options are less romantic. They work. Play the parts yourself and record your own textures. Use sample packs whose licence explicitly allows commercial release, and actually read that licence, because “royalty-free” only means you don’t pay per use, not that anything goes at all. Public-domain compositions are free to play, but somebody else’s recording of one isn’t. That’s the whole point of our post on Christmas music for videos.

Streaming works the same way. Our guide to what streamers can actually play on Twitch goes through it platform by platform.

When the beat is needed by Thursday

Two kinds of readers end up here. Some days you want to learn the craft. Other times you need a chill track under a video by Thursday. Not everyone who wants to know how to make lofi wants to become a producer. That’s fine.

The second case is what Mubert Render is for. You describe a mood, genre and tempo, or the video itself, and get an original track at the exact length you need. It’s generated from samples that musicians uploaded and get paid for, so there’s an actual person at the other end of the supply chain, not a scraped record. The track is cleared for commercial use under the platform licence, but the exact scope depends on your plan. Check the live pricing page first.

Length turns out to be a real issue. In Mubert’s own data from the last 28 days, a bit more than one in five tracks generated in Render got re-cut to a different duration. People clearly want the beat to end when the video ends.

Still, write one yourself first. Even a bad first beat teaches you what a good one has.

A checklist for your first lofi beat this week

This is
