If you make music with AI tools and release it through a distributor, that number is about you. Or at least your street. This post covers the announcement, how the Spotify AI slop filter works, the full timeline and what to change before your next release.

The short version: Spotify didn’t delete the tracks. They’re still on the service, but no algorithm or editor will send anyone their way. Picture a basement with the lights off and no stairs. So nobody visits.

The numbers Spotify gave on AI slop

Two numbers. Spotify says it has “taken more than 50 million slop and spam tracks out of recommendations” this year. On top of that, it has removed more than 75 million spammy tracks altogether for serious or repeated rule violations.

But the second one has a catch. A Spotify spokesperson told Music Business Worldwide that the 75 million figure dates from September 2025 and covered the 12 months before that, and that the company has kept removing tracks since but won’t share a new figure. So one number is new and the other is a rerun. (Press releases love a rerun.)

Variety confirmed that the 50 million tracks are still available, but listeners have to go looking for them. The Next Web caught the detail that matters most to AI creators: Spotify never split its AI slop figure into tracks made with AI and plain old spam.

How did it find them? Skips, mostly. Spotify studied the tracks listeners kept skipping, ignoring or rejecting, and found they kept matching the ones its systems had already flagged as slop or spam. Over six months, the company retuned its recommendation system, and editors now follow the same rule for playlists. Since then, Spotify says, listener complaints about this content have dropped.

What happened so far

Groundwork first.

April 2024: the 1,000-stream royalty threshold arrives. A track needs 1,000 streams and a minimum number of unique listeners in 12 months to earn recording royalties.

September 2025: Spotify announces an impersonation policy, a music spam filter and support for a DDEX standard for AI disclosures in credits, DDEX being the industry’s shared format for track metadata.

October 2025: Spotify announces plans for “artist-first” AI music products with Sony, Universal, Warner, Merlin and Believe.

Then 2026 filled up fast.

March: Artist Profile Protection enters beta, letting artists review releases that list them before those releases ever reach their profile page.

April: AI Credits and Verified by Spotify launch.

May: a UMG deal lets fans make AI covers and remixes through a paid Premium add-on. Merlin and Kobalt sign later.

August: Spotify announces AI Personas, a label for AI music acts that keeps them out of algorithmic and editorial picks by default, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Early October: a Duke Sanford Tech Policy Program report suggests Release Radar served undisclosed GenAI music, Music Ally notes.

October 13-14: Deezer says users will soon be able to hide fully AI-made music from search, and a day later YouTube Music starts labelling songs made mostly with generative AI.

October 20: the one-year AI slop update lands.

How Spotify decides a track counts as AI slop

One detector isn’t enough. Spotify combines listener engagement and feedback, upload patterns, metadata and several third-party AI detection tools, and it admits that AI detection has limitations and will only get harder as the generative models improve.

Spotify also hunts AI slop by its habits. The named ones are mass uploads, duplicates, SEO manipulation (stuffing titles with search terms), spammy playlist networks and artificially short tracks.

Read that list again. No “made with AI.” Every item describes a behaviour, which is why Hypebot called the approach anti-fraud rather than anti-AI. The Verge flagged the flip side: Spotify stopped short of mandating labels on all AI tracks. It labels identities.

That label is the AI Persona badge. Thousands wear it. Those profiles stay out of recommendations unless a listener follows them. Meanwhile, Verified by Spotify covers more than 300,000 artists. Hypebot reports that humans who use AI as a tool can still keep that badge, as long as they present themselves authentically on their profile.

The 1,000-stream threshold now has a second job

Spotify now calls its royalty threshold “a first line of defense for human artists,” and its own data says tracks that look AI-generated are 10 times more likely to miss the 1,000 streams needed for royalties. So AI slop rarely pays on Spotify, however much of it you upload. Generate 10,000 tracks at 40 plays each and you earn nothing. So: zero.

The reason matters because royalties come out of one shared pot. Beatdapp CEO Morgan Hayduk told NBC News that when slop inflates total streams, each legitimate rights holder gets a smaller share.

The threshold has critics, though. Music Ally notes that some independent labels and bodies say it hurts their sector most, and they worry Spotify could raise it later without asking them. The rule that starves a slop farm also starves a quiet folk record with 600 devoted fans. Spotify has added a new argument to an old fight.

Other streaming services label AI music, Spotify hides the slop

Rivals chose labels instead. YouTube Music started badging songs made primarily with generative AI on October 14 (our YouTube Music AI labels breakdown has the details). Apple Music made its AI Transparency Tags mandatory in August wherever AI created “a material portion” of a track.

Deezer already keeps fully AI-made tracks out of recommendations and editorial playlists. It says nearly 90,000 of them arrive every day, and we covered its new search toggle last week. Tidal went furthest. It cut royalties for fully AI-generated tracks.

The word “slop” started life as an insult. Now Spotify prints AI slop on its corporate blog, right next to the word “authentic.” Anyway.

Engadget argued the update is “still not going far enough.” Fair enough, for listeners. From a creator’s side, though, a quiet filter can hurt more than a visible label.

What the Spotify AI slop filter means for creators

Our first reaction was disappointment that Spotify still doesn’t label every AI track. Then we read on. After the list of signals, we decided a label would change less. Skips trained this filter. If people finish your track, save it and come back, you don’t fit the pattern. If you upload 400 keyword-titled lo-fi tracks in one week, you are the pattern.

In short, Spotify buries AI slop that behaves like spam, while AI music that behaves like music mostly goes untouched, and at the same time it is building licensed AI tools with the major labels. So its message is about where the music comes from, not about the technology.

False positives worry us. Spotify admits its AI slop detection is imperfect, and it hasn’t broken the 50 million down. None of the coverage we read explains how an artist learns a track left recommendations, or how to dispute it. We went looking for an appeals form. Instead, we found adjectives. That’s the gap we’d most like Spotify to close. (For the far end of the spam spectrum, see the first prison sentence for AI streaming fraud.)

What to do before your next AI-assisted release

Start with disclosure. Submit AI Credits through your distributor if it supports them, since Spotify says artists already send tens of thousands a day. Then release fewer tracks and finish them properly, because mass uploads and duplicates are named tactics. Fewer, better. Write titles for people, not search engines, and keep tracks at a normal length. Run a real artist profile and apply for verification. Boring. Works. Finally, promote to people who will actually listen, because every skip feeds the Spotify AI slop filter.

Background music is a different case. If your AI music sits under a video, a stream or an app instead of on a release, Spotify’s filter never sees it. That’s the job Mubert Render does: it builds tracks from samples made by real artists, licensed within your plan’s scope.

For releases, the basement is still there. The only stairs out are listeners who choose to follow you, so give them a reason.

Spotify says it kept more than 50 million slop and spam tracks out of recommendations this year.
