It’s meant for ideation and output you didn’t ask for. v6-mini is the faster version, and the only one open to every user.

So access follows the plan. TechCrunch and Axios both report that v6 and v6-wild sit behind paid plans, while mini is free. Suno’s help centre names those paid tiers: Pro and Premier. Free users get mini. That’s it.

The help centre also says every Suno v6 variant generates up to 8 minutes per song. Eight. That’s long enough for a prog intro, or for a lo-fi loop that has made some very serious life choices.

According to Axios, Chief Product Officer Jack Brody says the new models are faster, higher quality and better at following detailed instructions. Every launch says that. We’ll judge it by the features, not the adjectives.

Then there’s the name. Somebody decided the sensible model keeps the plain name and the adventurous one gets a suffix, like a car trim level for chaos. We spent a whole lunch break arguing that the flagship should have been called v6-mild, and that the free one should have been called v6-fine, because “fine” is how most free tiers feel. Nobody won. Anyway.

Which Suno v6 model to use for which job

Pick a Suno v6 model by the job, not by prestige. The flagship isn’t automatically right. Mini isn’t a punishment.

Use v6-mini for sketches. It’s fast, it’s on every plan, and a sketch is supposed to be disposable. Generate ten, keep one, don’t get attached.

Switch to v6 when the brief is fixed. If a client already said “warm, 90 BPM, no vocals, ends on a hit”, you want the model built to follow instructions, not the one that treats your brief as a loose suggestion from a stranger. Improvisation is lovely. Not on a deadline.

Reach for v6-wild when the safe version sounds like a hotel lobby at 3 p.m. That’s its whole purpose, according to the launch coverage: ideas you wouldn’t have typed yourself.

One more note. The free tier didn’t just get a new model, it got one from the current generation. That matters if you’ve been judging the app by whatever the free plan used to run. (We judged it that way. We were reviewing last year’s engine and blaming this year’s.)

Still, don’t compare the three by ear on day one and call it a test. Run the same prompt through all of them. Write down the keeper. Then repeat with a second prompt, and a third, and after a week the notebook will know more about your taste than any review, including this one.

Your old prompts need a retest on the new models

Prompts age. Fast.

Most of us wrote v5.5 prompts the way people talk to an old printer: specific words in a specific order, plus a few superstitions that once seemed to help. If the new generation really follows detailed instructions better, as Brody says, those superstitions stop being harmless. A model that listens closely will take your leftover workarounds literally.

Our confession: our favourite v5.5 prompt was about forty words long. Half of them were there because one good result happened after we added them, and we never dared to take them out again. That’s not prompt engineering. That’s a lucky sock.

So strip your prompts back. Start with genre, mood, tempo and one instrument, then add details one at a time and listen to what each one changes. If a word does nothing, it goes. Words that make things worse are probably v5.5 habits.

Keep the old prompt in your notes, right next to the new one, because when a client asks for “the same vibe as last time” you’ll want both, and you won’t remember which was which.

v5.5 was the personal model, and it lasted five and a half months

On March 26 the company shipped v5.5 and built it around personalisation. Music Business Worldwide covered the headline features: Voices, Custom Models and My Taste. Voices put your own singing into generations. MBW reported it was limited to Pro and Premier, with a check that matched your voice to a random phrase you had to speak out loud, which is the closest AI music has come to a bank asking for your mother’s maiden name.

Custom Models went further. Suno’s release notes said you could train a personal version of v5.5 on at least six of your own tracks.

So the spring story was “it sounds like you”. The autumn story is “it has a paper trail”. Different priorities.

There’s good news if you spent an evening feeding six songs into a custom model. The Suno FAQ for v6 says existing custom models upgrade automatically, so the new generation powers them from now on, and songs you made with the old custom model stay playable and unaffected.

The catch hides in “v6 powers”. Same tracks. Different engine. If your custom model had a particular grit, test it again before you promise a client the same sound, because nobody knows yet whether the grit made the trip.

Suno v6 edits one section instead of rerolling the whole song

For two years the main editing tool in AI music was the reroll button. You hated the second chorus, so you generated the whole song again and hoped the first verse survived. It rarely did.

The new generation changes the unit of work. Axios reports that Suno v6 makes precise edits from plain-language prompts, down to a single lyric or chorus. Inputs: text, audio, images, video. TechCrunch adds a trick producers will like: you can separate an instrument from a sample and build a new beat from it.

For client work, that’s a real change. “Make the bridge quieter” is a brief a person gives, and now the tool can take it while the rest of the song stays exactly where it was, so the parts the client already approved stay approved. That alone saves more evenings than any jump in audio quality.

It also changes how you should store work. When edits are local, a song becomes a document with versions rather than a lottery ticket. Name the versions. Future you will want to know which chorus the client actually heard.

A bigger plan sits behind it. Billboard’s Q&A on the launch notes that a key part of the announcement was new products that open revenue opportunities, including models that can remix and sample popular songs. CEO Mikey Shulman framed it the same way in his launch post, calling the generation a foundation for new products across the music ecosystem. No date yet. We wouldn’t plan a release around it.

The old models are retired, but your old songs stay in the library

Every earlier model is retired, the Suno FAQ for v6 says, but your songs stay in your library, unchanged, and you can still listen to them, share them, remaster them and cover them. What’s gone is making anything new on v5.5.

The same FAQ also asks, with a straight face, what to do if you preferred the older models. That question exists because enough people asked it. We’ll leave it there.

This has two practical consequences. First, any new work on an old song happens on the only models left. If you extend a v5.5 track today with Suno v6, you get one song made by two generations. Listen to the join before you publish, because the second chorus may come from a slightly different singer than the first, and listeners notice a new vocalist faster than they notice a new mix.

Second, the files you’ve downloaded are now your masters. If the only copy of a track lives in your library, that copy is all there is. The company also capped monthly downloads for subscribers days before the launch, so you can’t grab everything in one panicked evening. We went through the numbers in our post on Suno’s download limits. Download the songs you care about first. Experiment second.

(Nobody enjoys finding out that the cloud was a single point of failure with a nice logo.)

The licensing story behind Suno v6 is the real update

The licence history explains the whole release. In November 2025 the company settled Warner Music Group’s lawsuit and promised licensed models in 2026. Suno v6 is that promise. Since then it signed BMG and, the day before launch, Believe, and Brody told MBW the previous models would retire on launch day itself.

Retiring everything at once is the unusual part. Keeping v5.5 as a legacy option would have been easier on users and bad for the deal. A licensed model sitting next to the unlicensed one it replaced doesn’t look like a fresh start. It looks like a menu with a back door.

Then comes the training data. TechCrunch reports the company’s claim that Suno v6 doesn’t use the data behind earlier versions. Brody told MBW the new set excludes Universal and Sony, and described it as licensed partner data, user data and the team’s accumulated learnings.

Billboard’s industry sources add that WMG licensed only a subset of its catalog for training, and that clearing anything beyond it is up to the company. Shulman also stressed that “there is no unlicensed partner data” behind the models.

Read that last line twice. It’s precise. It tells you something true about partner data and nothing at all about any other data.

Our confession: the first time we saw “licensed model” in a headline, we assumed the lawsuits were over. They were over for about nine days.

Universal and Sony sued nine days later

On September 18, the two labels filed a new 45-page lawsuit in federal court in Massachusetts, as Variety reported. They argue the new model still infringes their recordings. The complaint names 60,202 of them and calls that “only a small portion” of the total.

Their theory: family trees. According to The Hollywood Reporter, UMG and Sony claim Suno trained v6 on users’ interactions with the old models. The labels already allege those old models rest on mass infringement. MBW quoted the complaint’s summary: “v6 is not a fresh start; it is the fruit of the same poisoned tree.” Botany, but litigious.

The company told Billboard the claims “remain fundamentally flawed on both the facts and the law”. A spokesperson also listed what went into Suno v6: licensed partner content, community creations and preference signals, and the team’s learnings.

Odd part. Both sides say user activity went into training. They disagree on whether that matters legally, and since a court will settle that slowly, we won’t guess how.

For users, a pending case doesn’t switch anything off. The app works. Songs play. Downloads download. What it shakes is the phrase “fully licensed”, which some of you were about to paste into a client contract.

What Suno v6 means if you publish music for a living

Our argument fits in one line, so here it is: the biggest change since v5.5 isn’t the sound, it’s the supply chain, and the supply chain is exactly what’s now in court.

For a hobbyist, that changes very little. You make a song, it’s fun, your cousin hears it. But if you upload to streaming services, sell tracks or score client videos, provenance starts to matter (provenance meaning where a track came from and what it was built on).

Platforms already sort by it. Deezer is building a toggle to hide fully AI-made music from search, and YouTube Music now puts a badge on songs made mostly by AI. Distributors have also pulled tracks once a lawsuit got close, as the DistroKid takedowns showed.

None of this means Suno v6 tracks will get pulled. It means “made with a licensed model” is a claim someone may ask you to back up, and right now that claim comes with a lawsuit attached.

Axios also reports that the company still blocks prompts asking for the likeness of a known artist or song. Good. Don’t route around it. “The filter let me” is not a defence anyone wants to test first.

If you need background music for videos rather than songs with a singer, the supply chain question gets simpler. Mubert, for example, generates tracks in Render from samples that human artists upload through Studio and get paid for, so the question of where the sound came from has a short answer. Check the licence scope for your plan either way. “Cleared” always comes with a footnote.

A checklist for Suno v6 users this week

The museum is open, the new wing has three rooms, and the lawyers have moved into the gift shop. Here’s the checklist for Suno v6 before you make anything you plan to sell.

Download the v5.5 songs you care about before you spend this month’s downloads on experiments.

Run one prompt through all three Suno v6 models and note which result you kept.

Strip your old prompts back to genre, mood, tempo and one instrument, then rebuild.

Retest any custom model on a song you know well before promising a client its sound.

Listen to every join where a new extension meets a v5.5 original.

Rename versions after each section edit so you know which chorus the client approved.

Record which model and date made each track you publish or sell.

Check the UMG and Sony case once a month, not once an hour.

Three new models, one retired generation, a licence story and a lawsuit nine days later.
