The song he supposedly sampled came out two years after his. Read that again. That’s the mood of the current DistroKid takedowns: tracks disappear from streaming with no email and no warning. And every so often the reason only works if your producer owns a time machine.

DistroKid has now confirmed to The Verge that the removals are a direct response to claims from Universal Music Group. So this isn’t a glitch. It’s policy. Then the company confirmed the link to UMG. Artists also say the sweep is catching non-AI music. Awkward, for a cleanup aimed at AI.

The most detailed case comes from McGwire, a musician who calls himself a “Video Game boy”. He reported that six of his songs were gone from streaming. He says DistroKid didn’t contact him before or after, so he had to chase the company himself, and reaching a human meant first sitting through what he called a “lengthy circular conversation” with a bot.

The removed tracks are a fun mix. One was a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely”, which he says he had a proper licence for. Another used a beat he bought on a marketplace, where other artists had licensed the same beat. Then there was the sample from the future. Still unexplained.

(We’d love to read the claim that flagged it. We suspect we never will.)

He isn’t alone. Nerdcore rapper Insane Ian posted that one of his original songs came down with no warning and no reason given. Rapper King Chase told The Verge that a whole album by an artist he works with disappeared the same way. It had been up for three or four years, he said, without a single copyright strike. Then it wasn’t.

UMG called it a slop pipeline, and the pipe flinched

Now the background. Universal Music Group has filed a federal lawsuit against DistroKid in the US, Music Week reports. The case is in the US district court for Delaware, and the claims are deceptive trade practices and copyright infringement. It was filed on September 15. UMG, together with Capitol Records and Capitol Christian Music Group, says DistroKid is building an “AI slop pipeline”.

Music Week also quotes the complaint’s claim that DistroKid keeps distributing tracks “even when it knows the tracks infringe Plaintiffs’ (or others’) rights.” Read that sentence as a distributor would. If the lawsuit is partly about what you didn’t take down, the cheapest short-term fix is to take down more. Seen that way, the DistroKid takedowns make a grim kind of sense. Sort it out later. Maybe.

DistroKid’s official line comes from Amanda Ferri, VP of Artist Services. She said “a very small number of recordings” came down because of UMG’s claims. Ferri added that the company strongly disputes the allegations and regrets the disruption to affected artists. So DistroKid disagrees with the lawsuit and acts on the claims anyway. Legally, that’s normal. For an artist whose album just vanished, it feels like being fined by someone who keeps telling you the ticket is wrong.

The help desk is part of the product

The Verge also spoke to producer and marketer Jesse Cannon, who said DistroKid should have given artists a warning and a way to dispute the removals. He added that former employees told him the company sees customer service as “a waste of profits” because its market share is so high. That’s his account, not a verified fact about how DistroKid runs. Still, it matches what artists describe after their DistroKid takedowns.

A quick tangent. Somewhere there’s a support bot that has spent weeks explaining to musicians how to change their artist name. All they wanted to know was why their album is gone. The bot doesn’t know about the lawsuit. It’s having a perfectly nice day. Anyway.

So here’s the lesson: a distributor does more than move files. It decides what stays live and how fast it reacts when a major label leans on it, and it also decides if you hear about any of it, which is the part most artists only learn about after the fact. Most of us picked a distributor on price and upload speed. Nobody checked the dispute process. Until recently, nobody needed to.

DistroKid takedowns are an AI-music story and a human one

UMG framed the suit around AI. Yet the DistroKid takedowns described so far include covers, licensed beats and original songs. That’s the real problem with a sweep like this. Matching systems and claim queues can’t see intent, and they run in bulk. Bulk is blunt. When a major files a lot of claims and the distributor wants to look fast, some licensed human music comes down too.

If you release AI-assisted music, this hits you twice. You’re in the group the lawsuit is about. You also depend on the same distributor as everyone else, with the same thin appeals process. We’ve written about how AI streaming fraud finally got a price tag. The industry’s response to fraud keeps landing on whoever is easiest to reach. One DistroKid account with no lawyer is very easy to reach.

We’ve lost arguments to support bots too. It’s a special kind of tired, because you can’t prove the bot is wrong. It just isn’t there.

“A very small number” may well be accurate as a share of a huge catalogue. For the artists hit by DistroKid takedowns, that number is every track they lost.

Before the next DistroKid takedown, do this

Nobody can promise your releases will survive DistroKid takedowns, or anyone else’s. A few boring habits make a removal cheaper to fight and quicker to reverse:

Keep a folder for every release with the licence, receipt or contract for each sample, beat and cover.

Save the original project file as well, since it shows when you made the track.

Write down your release dates and ISRCs somewhere other than your distributor’s dashboard.

Check your catalogue on the streaming services every now and then.

When something disappears, ask your distributor in writing which claim caused it and who filed it.

For AI-assisted tracks, keep a record of how you made them and what you own. Where the music came from is exactly what the lawsuit is asking.

Music in videos and streams needs the same paperwork habit. Our piece on the AI music licensing problem no one explains covers what a licence actually proves.

The case is still at an early stage. A court order has moved DistroKid’s reply to the complaint to December 4, with an initial conference due by November 13. DistroKid says it’s working to minimise the disruption from the takedowns. Until that turns up as an email in your inbox, assume you’re the one keeping the receipts. Make sure they’re dated, too. Apparently that matters even when the song you’re accused of copying hasn’t come out yet.

DistroKid confirmed that recent song removals are a response to claims from UMG.
